Why this project was needed
Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, central London experienced a substantial increase in visitor numbers during the national mourning period. St Thomas' Hospital, situated adjacent to Westminster Bridge, anticipated a significant rise in Emergency Department attendances and orthopaedic admissions during this 12-day period. Understanding the impact of such large-scale public events on trauma services is important for future major incident planning.

What the project set out to achieve
To quantify the impact of the national mourning period for HM Queen Elizabeth II on orthopaedic trauma workload at St Thomas' Hospital, and to assess any associated economic impact.
Objectives
Specific measurable steps
- Compare ED orthopaedic attendances during 9–19 September 2022 against the equivalent 2021 period.
- Compare orthopaedic admissions during the same comparative periods.
- Assess the economic impact of increased emergency care provision during this period.
- Quantify the effect on elective orthopaedic activity from cancellations during the mourning period.
