Why this project was needed
Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a complex spinal procedure performed at Guy's Hospital for patients with degenerative disc disease and spinal instability. Local complication rates and long-term clinical outcomes for our cohort had not previously been systematically reviewed. Benchmarking against published data is important to ensure the procedure is being performed safely and effectively within our unit.

To retrospectively assess local complication rates and patient outcomes following anterior lumbar interbody fusion at Guy's Hospital.
Objectives
Specific measurable steps
- Identify all adult patients who underwent ALIF at Guy's Hospital between January 2015 and December 2020.
- Document 90-day complication rates including wound, neurological and vascular complications.
- Collect clinical outcome data including pain scores and functional status at follow-up.
- Compare local complication rates against published national and international benchmarks.
